New Service: CARSS to Deliver Library Books to Seniors & Disabled Adults

In this double re-post from recent Sausalito Currents we let you know 1. that CARSS will now deliver library books to seniors and disabled adults living within the Sausalito and Floating Homes community; and 2. that more CARSS drivers are needed. Anyone who is resident in Marin County can sign up to the Sausalito Library (you do not need to be a Sausalito resident). If you have the time and the inclination to volunteer and become a CARSS (Call a Ride for Sausalito Seniors) driver, you’ll be doing your neighbors a great favor.

The Sausalito Library and Age Friendly Sausalito are joining forces to create a new home delivery service of library materials using volunteer drivers from Call a Ride for Sausalito Seniors (CARSS). Participation in this new program is free and open to residents of Sausalito and the floating home community who are 60 years of age or older, or to younger adults with a disability.

If you are interested in having books, movies, or audiobooks delivered to your door, you will need to fill out a short application and sign a liability waiver, in addition to being a library card holder. All CARSS drivers have been vetted by Verified Volunteers. The service is available Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For more information, please contact program coordinator Augie Webb at (415) 289-4121 or awebb@sausalito.gov.

Call a Ride for Sausalito Seniors (CARSS) was founded in 2015 as a result of the hard work of the City’s Age Friendly Task Force. After surveying the community, the task force developed a plan prioritizing the needs of aging residents, and local transportation was at the top of the list.In 2017, CARSS and its team of volunteer drivers provided more than 1,500 rides to residents of Sausalito and the floating homes who are age 60 and older.Unfortunately, CARSS is running low on volunteer drivers. If you have been thinking about volunteering in Sausalito, this is a great time to get started. CARSS requests that volunteers drive a minimum of one four-hour shift per month, or one there-and-back ride to an evening program at the Sausalito Library or another local venue. To start the application process to become a CARSS driver, please call (415) 944-5474 or download an application. CARSS is a City of Sausalito program managed by Sausalito Village, a nonprofit volunteer organization that provides a support network for seniors who want to age in place.
