The Bolinas Museum is presenting an exhibit entitled “Ship of Dreams: Artists, Poets, and Visionaries of the S.S. Vallejo (1949 – 1969).” This is the same exhibit that appeared at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Arts last April.

On Saturday, February 16 Betsy Stroman, the author of “The Art and Life of Jean Varda,” will give a brief talk at the museum about the flamboyant Varda, who lived and worked on the Vallejo from around 1948 until shortly before his death in 1971. Moored off Varda Landing Road, the Vallejo became a dynamic home and cultural incubator for artists, musicians, and literary luminaries such as Gordon Onslow Ford, Jean Varda, Alan Watts, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and many others.

Sausalito Village is planning a group trip to Bolinas to enjoy brunch at the Coast Café followed by a brief walk to the Museum to view the exhibit and hear Betsy’s talk at 2:00 p.m. The group will meet at 11:00 a.m. in the City Hall parking lot. Transportation cost is $16 for Sausalito Village members, $26 for non-members. Departure from Bolinas will be at approximately 3:45 p.m. returning to Sausalito about 5:30 p.m. Participants will get separate checks for brunch. To join the group, please RSVP to Betsy betsystroman@gmail.com or 415.331.1464.

If you can’t join the group outing, the exhibition is already on display, with other special talks scheduled in March.
