New App Gets Tides Right

Gate 6 ½ resident Jung Vu has launched a new app that provides more accurate local tide projections than have ever been available before.

MarinFlood provides real-time and future tidal water levels for flood-prone locations in Southern Marin. This ad-free utility combines official NOAA astronomical tide predictions with proprietary forecast models to deliver more accurate water level estimates — especially during storm events when standard predictions fall short.

Jung built MarinFlood after seeing neighbors blindsided by floodwaters that were higher than projections from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) — most notably during the surge events of November 2025 and January 2026. He notes: “While NOAA provides a vital baseline, it doesn’t account for the local atmospheric pressure, wind, and sea-level anomalies that actually push water onto our streets.”

The graphic display depicts both NOAA’s predicted tide levels and more accurate MarinFlood projections. The app also has a number of entertaining and informative features, including:

Time Travel: Explore past floods or jump into the future to see potential flood days.
Smart Alerts: After signing in, enter an email address to get “set-and-forget” notifications up to 12 hours before a flood event.
Hyper-Local: Real predictions for the spots that actually matter to us, like Commodore Marina, Manzanita lot, Multi-Use Path, Gate 6 ½ Dock, Yellow Ferry Harbor, Gate 6 Road and more to come.
The Fish: Tides are exceptionally important to fish behavior, directly influencing feeding, movement, and oxygen levels. For MarinFlood, Jung has created fanciful animated fish that swim in the direction of the prevailing tides. If you find the fish distracting, you can turn them off.

MarinFlood is available for desk-top and laptop computers and mobile devices. Jung invites neighbors to download the app, explore its features, and give him your feedback.
