Friday, March 20 is the vernal equinox symbolizing rebirth, renewal, and the balance between light and darkness. In the spirit of the day, the City of Sausalito Parks and Recreation Department is holding a “Gravity & Levitation” event to embrace and acknowledge the full spectrum of life, including loss, grief and the challenges posed by long-term caregiving.

The public is invited to gather at 6 p.m. in Tiffany Park for a period of silent reflection, simple artmaking and group meditation, near Tim Collins’ artwork “Gravity is a Law in the Material World, Levitation is a Law in the Spiritual World”, commissioned in the 1990s as a memorial to lives lost. Tiffany Park is located at 399 Bridgeway, just before the beginning of the boardwalk leading to the old Valhalla Restaurant.

Sausalito First Lady and local artist Lucinda Eubanks will lead participants in making paper ornaments of remembrance for the tree, with Roy Remer, Executive Director of the Zen Caregiving Project (formerly the Zen Hospice project), and Paul Mowry, City Chaplain, guiding the reflection and meditation.

Then the group will walk a half mile to Vina Del Mar Plaza to witness the lighting of a tree, which will remain lit until the end of April.

After the event ends, coffee, hot cocoa and mingling will take place at Franko & Co (across Bridgeway from the park) to give attendees a chance to build community and watch the lighted tree and artwork come to life in the descending darkness.

There is no charge to attend, but RSVPs are encouraged and donations are welcome to help defray the costs of the event and support complementary future city programming.

This event has received generous partnership support from: Zen Caregiving Project, Sausalito Village, Lucinda Eubanks, Paint Art Collective, Franko & Co., Sausalito Woman’s Club and Age Friendly Sausalito.
