Designing Our Future | The Resilient Bay Summit—final presentations and award ceremony for the Bay Area Resilient by Design Competition—takes place May 17 and 18 in Alameda. Watch the live stream on Thursday May 17 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. or access videos of the presentations through the Resilient by Design YouTube channel. You can also attend the Resilient Bay Summit Party and Award Ceremony on Friday May 18 where you will be able to meet and chat with the design groups, view the presentation boards, and see who is selected as the overall winner (RSVP here).

Most of the action for the Resilient by Design Bay Area Challenge has been happening elsewhere—see the map for details—and neither the floating homes community nor Marin City made the final cut. Nonetheless, over the past few months our neighbors in Marin City have been busy working with P+SET (PERMACULTURE + SOCIAL EQUITY) and Shore Up Marin to forge community relations and find appropriate solutions: see overview.

Ultimately the goal is to find specific solutions with broad applications. At the end of the day we are all in this together—a concept reinforced when we pull back to see the Bay Area as a whole. Expect to see at least one of the proposals include floating homes and work space as part of the solution to sea level rise.

More than a paper exercise, the winning project will receive hefty funding towards realizing their design concept. In the meantime we have an opportunity to see our region from a variety of perspectives. And to appreciate the inventiveness and different approaches to how we might confront/face/address sea level rise in particular and disaster preparedness (earthquakes, for example) in general. At least we’re not waiting til the water reaches our ankles to figure it out.
