Do you know your holding tank’s capacity? How many times can you flush your toilet before your holding tank is ready to overflow? These and other questions were posed by Emergency Services chair Flo Hoylman at the FHA Annual Meeting, as she introduced the world premiere of a 5-minute video, “Houseboat Waste Management 2020.”
The video, featuring FHA Member of the year Peter Hudson from Main Dock, can be viewed on the Emergency Preparedness page of the FHA website.
As the video points out, wastewater from our homes is pumped to collector tanks on shore, and then into the local sewer system. During the recent power outages, those collector tanks could not be emptied, so even folks with generators were warned not to flush their toilets because if the holding tanks overflow, the wastewater could back up into our homes. Flo, Pete, and others are working with the various marina harbormasters to install generators that will empty those shore-side tanks. Check back for further news as developments are finalized.
