Floating Homes Exempted from Proposed Parcel Tax

Rendering of new MLK campus, now under construction | post by Larry Clinton

Voters in the Sausalito Marin City School District will be asked to approve its first parcel tax on the November 5 ballot. The measure would assess a tax of 15 cents per square foot annually for each residential or commercial building for eight years.

Thanks to the efforts of Main Dock’s Lauren Walters, floating homes will be exempt from the tax. Lauren, who has been on the school board for a year and a half and who was trained as an attorney, stated that we have no parcels to tax, confirmed by the district’s counsel.

Ours is the only Marin school district that does not have a parcel tax. The tax is expected to raise about $1.3 million annually to help recruit and retain teachers and run educational programs. “It is important to improve the outcome for our kids,” Lauren told the Floating Times.

He added that floating home marinas will also be exempt from the tax.

Lauren further pointed out that the new MLK campus now under construction on Nevada Street will replace the middle school in Marin City and all staff will be able to move over. “We’re lucky to be able to consolidate the kids and faculty in one campus,” says Lauren.
