Parking Free Downtown

This is what the new passcard looks like  |  photo and post by Larry Clinton

After years of procrastination, I finally got a resident passcard good for parking in downtown municipal lots.

For 40 years, these were only available to residents of Sausalito, despite constant lobbying from the floating homes community. Even when the City Manager was living in a rental home on Gate 6 ½, we couldn’t break that bureaucratic logjam. But as inclusiveness was trending in 2020, the city decided to accommodate all residents in Zip Code 95965.

So I went online, printed out a one-page form, filled it out and mailed it in with a check for $25. Now I’m the proud possessor of a shiny new Parking Smart Card that can be used like a credit card at the pay stations in the downtown lots. It even came with illustrated instructions which, if you’ve ever tried to work those infernal machines, is an added blessing.

The card has no date, so once you’ve recouped your $25, it’s a free ride from then on, good for three hours a day, which is plenty of time for Jazz and Blues by the Bay, lunch at Poggio, or an art gallery crawl.
