Long-time resident and fan of the Sausalito waterfront community, Annie Sutter, died on September 22, 2025.
Having left Wisconsin in 1974 to explore fresh territory, Annie landed in Sausalito and found out she was home. Enchanted by the waterfront, she soon was writing a regular column entitled “On the Water” for the Marin Scope, and other works including The Old Ferryboats of Sausalito and History of Issaquah Dock while she was living here.
Annie was into boats and when she wasn’t sailing off to wonderful places such as Palmyra, she was often puttering about on her tugboat Cherokee, taking groups out to local venues like Angel Island, lunch at Sam’s in Tiburon, or just touring around Richardson Bay. And Annie could often be found walking around the waterfront and getting information for her next column or book.
Annie was also a wonderful artist who worked in many media. She would see something and know that it could turn into a wonder with a bit of imagination. Besides turning out great whimsical paintings, Annie also created unique objects such as handbags and t-shirts. Remember the Humming Toadfish shirts?
Annie will indeed be missed by those of us who knew her, and to honor her memory, there will be a “Remembering Annie Sutter” table at the upcoming Day in the Park event on May 3. Please stop by and see some of her treasures that will be for sale, share your memories, and perhaps pour something in your glass and toast Annie one more time!
