From October 1 of this year to March 31 of next year, approximately 900 acres of Richardson Bay waters will be closed to all boat traffic—including paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes. The annual closure creates a sanctuary for tens of thousands of migratory ducks, geese, and shorebirds while they refuel for their journeys south or settle in for the winter in the Bay Area.
Mandated by an ordinance of the Richardson Bay Regional Agency, the closure includes waters extending south from the edge of the apartments known as The Cove, to the tip of Strawberry Point, east to Belvedere, and north to Blackie’s Pasture. In adition to serving as a wildlife sanctuary, the area facilitates Audubon Center research on water birds, eelgrass, and native oysters. Sanctuary boundaries are designated by buoys and marked pilings. Please observe and be respectful of these during the closure.
