PG&E’s Safety Action Center sends along these tips for a safe holiday season. Whether you’re decorating, traveling, or hosting, keep these key pointers in mind:

1) Holiday Lighting:

  • Use LED lights and power strips to reduce fire hazards, as they stay cool and use less energy, saving you money on your energy bills.
  • Always check for frayed wires or damaged bulbs before use.
  • Never overload electrical outlets—use surge protectors or smart power strips instead.

2) Fire Safety:

  • Keep flammable objects like holiday trees, garlands, and decorations away from heat sources such as fireplaces and space heaters.
  • Water your live tree regularly to prevent it from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.

3) Traveling for the Holidays:

  • Turn off and unplug non-essential electronics to prevent power surges or fires while you’re away.
  • Set a timer for outdoor and indoor lights for security and energy savings.

4) Cooking Safety:

  • Never leave your stovetop unattended while cooking holiday meals, and ensure that smoke alarms are in good working order.
