Helen Vandemann returned to Gate 6 1/2 on Friday, March 9 after having been severely injured in a bicycle accident on Bridgeway. She was brought home in a paratransit van, and met by neighbors Lori Bergeron, Blaise Simpson and Jane Clinton.

Using a wheelchair borrowed from the Floating Homes Association’s emergency services trailer, Helen’s paratransit driver helped her down a steep ramp and up some tricky steps up to her home, where she’ll continue her recuperation. As she crossed her threshold, Helen was heard to say, “There’s a giant step for womankind.”

Neighbors have volunteered to help Helen with meals and to run errands for her until she regains her mobility.
